“House” The only reason I would even consider having cable![]()
The writers have done it again! The cast on House is now coming to life with a closer look at the new characters from season 4… and the ever so talented iconoclastic Hugh Laurie. Brilliant Genius!! If This first episode of season 5 is an Omen of what’s yet to come, it’s going to be a great season for us and for House!
Can’t wait for more![]()
Wow! Kudo’s to the writers cast and crew! House gets better and better with every season and every episode. Our whole family hopes it lasts as long as The Simpsons. We look forward to every new episode and own every season on DVD.
Thanks for hours of drama, suspense, laughter and tears.
Like it![]()
I never bought into the criticism that the new characters were the problem with the drifting of Season 4. The new characters really do show promise as evidenced in this 1st episode of 5. My contention all along is that there was some sloppy writing in some of the episodes of 4 and that the characters are really what the writer makes of them, and good acting.
This 1st episode is more reminiscent of the classic House. I would have liked to have seen House more involved with the medical decisions here, but it’s understandable that time needed to be devoted to build the personal story involving Wilson.
It really leaves one wondering how House can hold his life together. He is the extreme case of a person, or people, each of us have known, or know. This is what partly drives the popularity of this show.
I look forward to seeing how his character unfolds, or unravels, throughout this season and hopefully many more to come.

Good ole Tom & Jerry!![]()
My kids love Tom & Jerry. Who couldn’t? (I’ll never forget, when I was 18, I was on a plane headed from Denmark to LA and the overhead played Tom & Jerry cartoons- the old one’s from the 60′s. Every adult was laughing their heads off! Adults laughing…at a cartoon!)The Magic Ring has all the chases and ‘cartoon violence’ as the old ones did including a lot of other characters that have been forgotten, like Droopy!
Love this film as much as my kids. It has great humor and Tom & Jerry are still chasing each other, even if they have to save each other now and then!
Fun,Fun,Fun![]()
Our son loves this DVD. Plays it over and over again. Any Tom and Jerry fan will too.

Worse that Jar-Jar Binks.![]()
I loved Blue Harvest. Though it was hilareous. Had high expetations for the Something, Something, Somthing Darkside. Was utterly disappointed. It was the same old joke and they tired old references. I think Seth is losing his touch.
I’d wait for them to show it on TV.
Something, Something, Something…Eh?![]()
I don’t know if it’s the comparison to Blue Harvest or that it’s difficult to just satirize The Empire Strikes Back while including the majority of the plot, but Something Something Something Darkside just kinda missed the mark. The entire program felt a little rushed, taking too long for some of the gags and speeding through others. If you’ve watched the trailer, the only really funny part you missed were the cracks at Fox in the credits at the beginning.
A great parody.![]()
I thoroughly enjoyed this and it delivered in all the ways I expected. I will look forward to the next one.

Ah, BBC, you’ve done it again![]()
I love Shakespeare. I’ve seen many of his plays performed live, I’ll go to any Shakespeare movie playing, I’ve read ALL the plays.
I would love to love BBC productions, I really would. I’ve tried to watch a number of them over the years, and I’ve never made it through even one. Why? Stilted direction, stilted dialogue, stilted acting. Although I do believe in taking Shakespeare seriously, the BBC takes it much too seriously.
This is a comedy, for Bard’s sake! Act like it. Don’t shoot entire scenes with all the actors sitting down. Or standing like sticks. Move around, talk animatedly, show some emotion and fire.
I think I made it through fifteen minutes of this one, so take that for what it’s worth from a real Shakespeare lover.
disappointed![]()
I guess because it was offered to me as “free” my Amazon Unbox viewer became corrupted and I was unable to re-install. I expect better from Amazon.

Jump out of your chair![]()
It took me about six viewings before I stoped jumping out of my chair at the ghost scenes. Celebrated Irish actor Ciarin Hines is a fantastic lead character, Michael. Paring him with Iben Hejejle was an inspired match. His humanity and her warmth kept me routing for a connection. The heart thumping kissing scene did not let me down. Aiden Quinn played a great selfish, drunk, jerk,Named Nicholous. I could not stand the guy. I hope it makes it to my small town so I can see it on the big screen. Im sure the video download was only an apetiser. Enjoy, RoseAnne

Finally this comedic remove on the James Bond series makes its procedure onto DVD, and for completists and fans of James Bond this DVD promises not only the 1967 version of Ian Flemings first 007 new but also an edited down version of the very first James Bond movie, the 1950s CBS TV movie that starred Barry Nelson as James Bond (thats just, Sean Connery was NOT the first actor to picture 007) . Made for an American audience, the character of James Bond is a CIA agent in that display and Leiter is the British intelligence agent. That movie, which is listed as a special feature on this DVD, also starred Peter Lorre as the villain Le Chiffre. Made in the days of live television this engrossing oddity is worth watching for the bloopers alone.
Years later, the rights to “Casino Royale” made it into the hands of another movie producer who, convinced that any attempt to perform a serious version of “Casino Royale” would be doomed without the talents of Sean Connery, decided to manufacture the remake as a comedy instead. With Peter Sellers playing James Bond and Orson Welles taking on the role of Le Chiffre everything seemed to be going heavenly until a script philosophize caused Sellers to breeze out on the project. Left with half a movie the producers were in pains and they scrambled to attach their production. One needs to understand this background to the movie to understand why it turned out the draw it did. In it’s final version it seems truly confused with several actors portraying the role of James Bond and several directors (including John Huston who also cameos as M) taking a crack at it. There is even an early appearance by Woody Allen and worn Bond girl Ursula Andress. For me personally, the Peter Sellers scenes are especially luminous and very amusing and David Niven plays the perfect gentleman observe. The action comes thick and hastily and in addition to Andress there are a number of actors familiar to devotees to the rival EON productions. This movie is truly fresh among the Bond canon and should be enjoyed as such.

Eon Production’s DR. NO was a stout hit in the early 1960s, and Eon quick snapped up the rights to the rest of Ian Flemming’s novels about well-organized view James Bond–except for the CASINO ROYALE, which had already been purchased earlier by CBS for a 1950s television adaptation. When the property damage up at Columbia Pictures, they decided to originate the satire to extinguish all satires with a host of writers, five renowned directors, and an all-star cast led by Peter Sellers. But Sellers’ ego reached well-known mass during the production and he was fired mid-way into filming–and suddenly roles that were originally envisioned as cameos had to be expanded to conclude the project. The result is one of the most bizarre films imaginable. The sage, such as it is, finds James Bond (David Niven) called out of retirement to deal with the sudden disappearance of secret agents all over the world. In order to confuse the unknown enemy, Sir James orders ALL secret agents to expend the name James Bond–and before you can blink there are Bonds aplenty running wild all over the globe. Eventually all the Bonds, including (through the magic of editing) Peter Sellers, wind up at Casino Royale, where they confront the execrable agents of SMERSH and a diabolical angry man with a spot to rule the world.
The station is absolute chaos, but that doesn’t prevent the film from being a lot of fun to peek. The entire cast runs wild with some expedient over-the-top performances, and whenever the writers can pickle in a gag or a peculiar spot turn they do precisely that: Bond (Niven) is attacked by decoy ducks; counter-agent Mimi (Deborah Kerr) swings from a drain pipe; Bond’s daughter by Mata Hari (Joanna Pettet) is kidnapped by a UFO; double agent Vesper (Ursula Andress) hides bodies in the deep freeze. And that’s fair for starters.

At one point Niven blows up the locked door of a psychedelically decorated dudgeon with lysergic acid–better know as LSD–and in a plot this is indicative of the entire film, which was made at the height of the 1960s ultra-mod movement: the whole thing has the feel of a blow-out acid trot, proper down to flashing multicolored lights and swinging 60s fashions. It is visually bright, to say the least. And then there is that eminent Burt Bacharach catch, easily one of the best of the decade, sporting Herp Albert on the main theme and Dusty Springfield’s legendary performance of “The Stare of Worship.” On the whole, the film is one of the most spirited hodgepodges of talent and weirdness I’ve ever encountered, and it never fails to amuse. As for the DVD itself, the print is reliable and the sound is too. The extras are a bit disappointing, however. The unique CBS version, included here, is a bore, and the making-of documentary is essentially a prolonged interview with one the film’s several directors. I’ve found that viewers tend to have extremely different reactions to this film–they either appreciate it or disapprove it, so you may want to rent this one first. But it’s one of my common guilty pleasures, and I recommend it for fans of the unexpectedly queer.

A look inside cloistered walls.![]()
Zeitgeist Films presents a documentary directed and written by Philip Groning. In French and Latin with English subtitles. Filmmaker Philip Groning spent six months living among the monks of the Grand Chartreuse Charterhouse in the French Alps for his documentary “Into Great Silence.” The filmmaker was granted unprecedented permission to film in 2002. This was not given lightly, for his request was put forth to the prior sixteen years earlier.
This is cinema at its purest and most exalted. It is hard to place into words a film, which is wrought in silence. For 162-minutes you will be allowed a glimpse of the ascetic strictness of the monks. I do not see this as a documentary, but an immersion into an entire way of life that will have no voiceovers or explanations. Just a small part of our time spent in transcendent meditation on the human pursuit of meaning, on man as a religious and social creature, on the form and function of symbols, ritual and traditions. And on the rhythms of work and prayer, night and day, winter and spring.
It is a beautiful film where everyone will take away something different and hopefully fulfilling. The film will not allow you to enter the world of the monks, but to just view it from the outside. You will see the day-to-day activities from season to season and be able to form your own opinions and conclusions. Many may at first experience impatience at the repetitions and variations encountered, but allow yourself time to adjust to the contemplative pace. And be witness to the ordinary moments that taken together are a representation of grace.
The Carthusian monks who are the subjects of this documentary do not have a great deal to say. Living in a light-filled stone charterhouse in a picturesque valley in the French Alps, they bind themselves to a vow not of literal silence but of extreme reticence. We view the daily lives, prayers and routines of this most ascetic of Catholic Orders founded in 1084 by Saint Bruno. The monks, because of their vow of poverty, subsist on very little. They pray aloud at times and sing solemn Gregorian chants, but they rarely speak, except on there Monday walks.
The monks in their rigor and discipline find their freedom and fulfillment. Your view on the monastery and our world will change as the movie progresses. And isn’t that what a good movie or book is suppose to accomplish? It is a world of yesteryear as it existed one thousand years ago, where some modern technology has crept in, as you will see. In our modern world of moral decay this gives us a window to a traditional Catholic existence. A two thousand year tradition of following the Desert Fathers into a way of life that is rarely, if ever, seen.
I feel that this film is about the presence of God, a God who is there for those who seek Him with their whole hearts. In the film only a blind monk offers some simple but piercing observations on Christian happiness, abandonment to God’s providential care, and the tragedy of the loss of faith and meaning in the modern world.
This film is not only for Catholics, it is for everyone in the world to see and benefit from.
Should have been called “Into Great Happiness”![]()
I saw this film in the Independent Film Forum in NYC’s Greenwich Village, and ended up having a two hour discussion about it afterwards. The main thing that shocked me about this film was how happy all of these monks are. If anyone would tell the average modern American to have every hour of the rest of your life neatly regimented into time segments, without time for television, vacations, or intimacy with members of the opposite sex, most Americans would thing of that as being excruciatingly difficult. However, when looking at the daily activities of these men, you “get it”. Because of the regimentation of their daily tasks, when they do get a few hours on Sunday to talk, those hours are beautiful and meaningful. Their lives seem like the way life was supposed meant to be, one of hard work and communion with the Creator. I highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for a film that will slow their mental pace down and make them reflect on the importance of the various things you value in your own life.
Fascinating, if slow, documentary about carthusian monks![]()
This almost silent three hour documentary tracks the daily lives of Carthusian monks living at the Chartreuse Monastery in the French Alps, as they live in a way that seems to be in such contrast with the modern world. It’s a fascinating movie if you are able to get into the slow rhythm of the film (if you are still in the movie theater after an hour, you will probably made it to the third hour). By the same token, it would be almost impossible to see it in your house on DVD, since there are so many possible distractions that would make you want to stop the film. Remarkably, given that European filmmakers tend to be among the most secular people in the world, the movie is also surprisingly respectful of the choices made by the monks in living in this particular way.
