I personally decided to return my novel discs for the corrected ones for several reasons. ONE – the title cards (which list the title of the cartoons) had been recreated for this DVD release but “someone” in the production process didn’t do their job and didn’t put these recreations to the cartoons. For me, this is a relatively minor reason to gather replacement discs. TWO – The 1934 cartoon “The Goddess Of Spring” in this DVD release is a poorer quality copy. This cartoon was digitally restored and was included as an extra on the last Snow White DVD release. I have this cartoon in the nicer quality on that Snow White DVD so this is calm a relativey minor reason to come by the replacement discs. THREE – The 1933 cartoon “The Night Before Christmas” is included incomplete on this release. A short scene of shadowy stereotyped toys in a parade are left out of the cartoon. I want the rotund uncensored cartoon so this is the MAJOR reason I returned my discs for the corrected discs. These newer discs are supposed to have all the above problems corrected.
Those reasons should give you, the customer, the information on whether you want to exchange your unique discs for the replacement discs. As the other reviewer stated – you can call 1-800-723-4763 in the U.S. or 1-888-877-2843 in Canada. Utter the Disney customer service representative that you are fervent in exchanging your More Laughable Symphonies discs for the corrected discs.

By the device, I got the situation when it was first released in December 2006 and I care for the quality of the cartoons. Except for the relatively minor oops listed above, this is a fabulous quality collection – one I will love (along with all the other Walt Disney Treasures DVD sets) the rest of my life!!! There are hours and hours of fun cartoons and nice animation on this situation!!

One reviewer expressed peril that all the remaining Amusing Symphony cartoons would be in this DVD release. Leonard Maltin, who was eager in producing these Walt Disney Treasures DVD sets, has stated that all the remaining Laughable Symphony cartoons will be in this station. As happened in the first Treasures location of the Droll Symphony cartoons, some of the more controversial cartoons might be found only in an Easter Egg. “Who Killed Cock Robin? ” is an example from the first space.
These last Comical Symphonies are among Disney’s rarest, most spirited, and most appealing cartoons. Some of them possess some bright experimental animation.

An above- average, atmospheric horror thriller
1408 is one of the best film adaptations of a Stephen King story, and is highly atmospheric. I too am growing weary of movies masquerading themselves as horror films these days, when all they offer are ludicruous plot lines and excess gore, violence and gratuituous sex.
By comparison, 1408 exceeds all expectations when taken for what it is – an intelligent horror movie that despite being rated a tame PG-13 delivers chills, thrills, and a strong performance by its lead actor, John Cusack, as well as a good supporting role by Samuel L Jackson. The story centers around a jaded author, Mike Enslin [John Cusack] who pens ‘true horror’ books but is actually a skeptic who doesn’t believe in the afterworld or entities associated with it. He receives a cryptic postcard one day that tells him ‘Do Not Enter 1408′ -being a room in the Dolphin Hotel in NY, where Enslin has left behind a painful past.
The rest of the movie picks up pace very quickly and viewers are in for a thrill ride as Enslin manages to overcome the protestations of the hotel manager [Samuel Jackson] and spends the night in 1408, which has one of the grisliest & bloody reputations in the annals of hotel history. Enslin finds his skepticism melting in the face of the unbelievable horrors he faces in 1408, and struggles to keep his wits about him to survive.
The horror in this movie is very palpable – there is no gore or excess violence, but there’s a pervasive sense of menace and evil that sends chills down one’s spine, and a couple of jump-out-your-seat moments[not to mention a couple of plot twists]. But what truly lifts this movie is the strong & riveting performance by John Cusack. The whole movie basically revolves around him and it is amazing to watch an actor bring so much depth to his role as well as portray a feeling of alienation, isolation and paranoia as Enslin tries to face his fears in 1408.
I am a fan of atmospheric horror movies, and 1408 ranks as one of my favorite horror movies [ The Haunting, Changeling, Rosemary's Baby, The Shining being some of my other favs]. If you’re a fan of the horror genre, or simply a fan of psychological drama & thrillers, then 1408 should please you.
A Good Movie Made Stronger By Masterful Pacing…
My wife and I went to see 1408 the other night. It was a birthday gift–otherwise she’d never have gone. She hates horror movies.
Interestingly, we both ended up enjoying the movie.
I read (or should I say listened to?) the short story prior to seeing the movie. Much like I prefer the movie version of the Shawshank Redemption, I prefer the movie version of 1408.
John Cusak is great. He usually is. Samuel Jackson gives a wonderful performance. Whoever the little girl actress is–she also did a remarkable job.
The ending rocks (I promise I won’t spoil anything).
What makes this movie a little stronger than most horror fare is this:
1. The pacing is great. Things never go over the top by being too intense for too long. This has been a big issue in horror films lately. They lose their suspension of disbelief from too much emotional weight. I don’t know about you, but I find myself mentally withdrawing from such stories to come up for air. When I re-engage, much is lost.
2. Speaking of suspension of disbelief wreckers…there is very little gore here. In this movie, when gore does come, it usually comes in the old photos. I feel this lack of abundant gore strengthens the pyschological impact of the movie as a whole. It also prevents the movie from turning plain old silly like recent gore-fests along the lines of The Hills Have Eyes.
While this is not my favorite Stephen King adaptation–Shawshank still reigns there–1408 is a solid, intelligent and emotionally resonant movie. You will not be wasting your money if you go to see this over the 4th of July holiday.
I give 1408 a strong recommendation.
PS- This also gets the award for best use of a Carpenters song in a horror film since In the Mouth of Madness.
Great movie… wrong ending. This is not what you saw in theaters!
First things first. This is one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in years. I’m happy that three of my favorite, recent horror films (1408, EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE and THE RING) have been PG-13. They rely more on great writing than gore. The two-disc DVD of 1408 had a second disc with the director’s original ending, which was a bit of a downer. I understood why it was reshot, as the ending shown in theaters framed the action with a bit more meaning and a bit less nihilism. Anyway, I bought the blu-ray version for the better picture quality and the slimmer, space-saving package. In checking the packaging, it looked like the blu-ray was pretty much the same as the two-disc DVD. WRONG! THE BLU-RAY HAS THE DIRECTOR’S CUT ENDING! Nowhere on the package is this indicated. Granted, the ending seen in theaters is available in the special features as an isolated scene… but I don’t want that. I want what the package implies: the theatrical cut in the blu-ray format. So, buyer beware. Doesn’t make this a bad film, but I’m not going to be able to get rid of my DVD.

This is the only documentary I have ever seen on the historic Brown vs. education decision. As an educator, I mediate it should be shown in contemporary high school classrooms to serve our students understand that it wasn’t that long ago that racial prejudice was institutuionalized in this country, and what a struggle it was to even originate to bring about change. This video is a limited on the long side, but can be watched over several class periods. An profitable discussion started and educational tool for the high school classroom. Teachers of history, psychology, street law, and civics classes should seriously mediate making this a portion of their curiculum.
In 1896, the Supreme Court ruled that “seperate but equal” was a accurate doctrine, with a sole dissenting vote, the first John Marshall Harlan. In 1954, NAACP attorney, and later the first murky Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall argued–and won–that it is NOT good, in the milestone “Brown v. Board of Education” decision. The title of this film is the phrase which gave the states “adequate” time to integrate–or desegregate–their school systems.

I was impressed with the film for a couple of principal reasons: (1) We are accustomed to celebrity knowledge. Anyone remotely aware of civil rights know of King, or Malcolm X, of Medgar Evers. But there were and are others–many others–working in the dusky before those figures even became celebrities. (And we know dinky, if anything, of them!) (2) Desegretation wasn’t honest a movement pushed by dismal people, but blacks and whites has to work TOGETHER. And they did, hence the laws going the design they did.
The vital theme of the film is that, despite Brown v. Board, there were two counties, one in South Carolina and the other in Virginia, who resisted the law using the phrase that makes up the film’s title. One went so far as to halt the school system for some time, lest they have to permit gloomy people into white classrooms!

I plan the film assign together the history of these events appropriately. They fit into contexts, for example, and the film included those contexts. For instance, our school history/fairy tales exhibit that slavery/racism was at least deinstitutionalized after the Civil War. Not so. As many an activist points out in the myth, considerable of the South was using any technique they could to continue the caste system by which unlit people were “nefarious,” maintained that intention by deplorable schools.
I opinion the producers did a glorious job too of describing how astute Marshall was in arguing Brown, and that, had the prior Chief Justice, someone of a contrarian, had not passed away and been replaced by Earl Warren, Brown might not have gone the method it did, and our country would be a different–and less desirable–place.
Oh, another reason I liked the film is that many of the activists, most of them dim, in the film, acknowledged that the world IS a better situation regarding bustle relations that it was a half century ago. Frankly, I gain tired out by young activists–black and white–who contend that nothing has changed. Is there work to do? Always. But it does no first-rate to suggest that nothing has changed, that we’re in a despair-filled pit of racial bigotry and we always will be. Let’s secure staunch.
I recommend this film, to schools, to activists, maybe especially to those who contend nothing has changed over the years. And remember, there ARE people who worked on civil rights of whom you’ve never heard. It’s about time we pay our respects to them, those who are living and those who are not. (I wish I could list some of their names here, but I’m never that complete in taking notes on a film!)

How do I characterize THE Anecdote OF DESPEREAUX? On the one hand, it’s got sterling animation, improbable yelp acting, and intriguing characters. On the other hand, it has a few too many characters, grown-up themes, and requires the viewer’s rapt attention. On the challenging hand, it’s unbiased not for limited ones. To be distinct, it’s ravishing for young ones to seek, it honest seems that they are not the film’s intended audience. This is peculiar since it LOOKS like it’s a kid’s explain. It was advertised as a kid’s expose. But my 4-year-old only watched when Despereaux himself was on the shroud, and my 11-year-old spent most of the movie telling me how different it was from the book. My husband and I liked it, but we all agreed it was simply “OK.”

THE Epic OF DESPEREAUX is actually a couple of tales, starting with the narrative of a sea-faring rat named Roscuro who loves soup. Through a irascible twist of fate, Roscuro’s presence results in the queen’s death (death by soup, bear it or not) and the banning of soup and rats from the kingdom. I had to wonder why no one had conception to banish the rats before but eh. Roscuro ends up in the dungeon where only the rats hang out. The second memoir is about Despereaux the mouse. We decided that Despereaux must be Flemish for “Dumbo” since that’s blooming distinguished who this mouse looks like. He can even wing with his giant ears. Despereaux is literally daring and as such is banished from mousedom for apprehension of the other meeses learning his poor traits. Guess where he’s banished to. That’s honest, the rat dungeon. Another yarn is about a peasant girl who dreams of being a princess. Apparently, this was toned scheme down from the fresh, in that the girl’s owner only sneers at her and doesn’t beat her in the movie. We peruse how she is sold to the king’s cook along with a herd of pigs. She eventually teaches us a lesson about jealousy. Then there’s the king’s tale. He’s so sunless at the loss of the queen that he bans soup and rats (as we’ve covered) and sits in his room all day plucking a mandolin. His sadness manifests itself as gray clouds and no rain – everything dies. Then there’s the princess who wishes she could fix everything, the jailer who wishes he could undo a tragic mistake, a cook who wishes he could once more perform soups, an deplorable rat who doesn’t seem terribly base, and, and, and… As I said, there’s a whole lot going on.
The short respond is that THE Story OF DESPEREAUX itself is not offensive, but there are better options in this genre. Capture a notice at Dragon Hunters, for instance. It deals with the same themes as Despereaux (honor, courage, valor) but my family liked it a lot more.

My daughter wanted to glimpse this film. Probably because the ads showed a cute mouse. We had never heard of this book so I can’t believe the tale.
The qualities of the stories are simple. Mistakes, redemption, pure of heart, honor, etc.
The movie opens with a ship heading to a city. On it is Roscuro the rat. Wearing cloths and an ear ring he looks forward for the eminent Soup of the day of the kingdom of Dor. Wandering through the city he accidentally finds himself in the royal hall as the royal family are first to try the soup. Too entranced with the smell; Roscuro falls into the Queens soup and she is frightened to seek a Rat, suffers a heart attack and dies. The guards waddle him and he eventally falls into a drainage where he lands in Ratworld. There he is discovered by Botticelli who befriends him and decides to narrate him the grand ways of being a Rat.
The grieving king then declares no more soup and rats are outlawed and any who harbor them will be punished.
Despereaux is born in mouseworld. He is not a typical mouse. Smaller then normal and he has over-sized ears. What’s worst is that he doesn’t cower, accelerate, and he likes to steal the cheese from mouse traps. His parents are called into school and told he is about to fail since he does not cower from knives and he draws pictures of cats. Even names one fluffy. The school master suggests that Despereaux follow his brother who graduated and was a pleasant mouse and could allege by example.
They head off to the library where Despereaux is supposed to eat books but instead he starts reading them and learns about knights, honor and questing to attach the gorgeous princess. This eventually takes him to the Princess Peas room where he befriends her as she is inviting by his gentlemanly ways.
Eventually, Desperaux is found out and he is punished as he has gone too far by talking to a human.
He is sent to Ratword where no mouse ever returns. The rats obtain him and toss him into a Colosseum where he is to be sacrificed to a cat.
Roscuro notices him and sees that he is different. He decides to assign him by declaring he wants to eat him. Botticelli, leader of the rats, agrees as he had been melancholy with Roscuro since he was refusing to eat flesh.
In Roscuro’s room, Despereaux tells Roscuro about knights, chivalry and his quest to build the princess. Roscuro recognizes the princess is the very girl whose mother he caused to die and decides to benefit as he may accept a chance of redemption by telling her he is sorry.
I could go on but I don’t want to completely spoil the film. Overall I liked the film as the hero really doesn’t solve all problems. It’s more cause and conclude that guides the chronicle. The actions of one affect another. Happiness is lost and as the narrator says a hero appears when most needed. Despereaux is the hero and he actions effects others and causes actions which cause the return of happiness.
The cast is worthy. Sigourney Weaver does a titanic job as the narrator. Matthew Broderick as Despereaux and Dustin Hoffman as Roscuro. Emma Watson as the princess(though I must admit I belief was Emily Watson) . Tracey Ullman as Miggery Sow. Kevin Kline as Andre the soup master. Ciaran Hinds as Botticelli(though I must admit I opinion Peter O’Toole would have been better) .
Visually the film is dazzling and the music adds to experience in the true ways.
Violence wise it’s fair great. There is fighting but you don’t gape things like stabbing, etc. It can be intense especially with the Rat chases and the rat gladiatorial scenes but it’s not too terrible. My girl is sensitive but she only wanted a slight comfort but she collected kept her eyes on the cover.
My daugher wants to spy it again as it’s a large film in her notion and I deem it’s was worth the theater designate. My daughter has already declared we have to come by the film when it goes to DVD.
