I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Logan’s Hurry fan, if such a thing exists, and was cheerful to peer the film released to DVD. The transfer looks large, and the letterboxed format preserves the fair cinematography. The acting is, by and gargantuan, elegant well-behaved. Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Richard Jordan are all in comely accomplish. Peter Ustinov chews scenery in his portions of the film, but isn’t that what you set him in a movie for? The visual effects won an Oscar abet in ’76, pre-Star Wars. I would station their quality somewhere above Marooned, but below 2001:a Area Oddyssey. The Aerial conception of the city that opens the film looks really cheesy, but the Carrousel sequence is downright eerie. It is even more powerful when you learn that the whole sequence was done in-camera, on-set with no compositing aside from the white beam of light that emanates from the ceiling. The compositing and matte paintings are breathtaking. The film takes a lot of flak for its costumes and for looking like it was shot in a shopping mall. I assume the costumes are moot–who know what we’ll be wearing in the future? These people live in a hedonistic, weather-free society. It stands to reason that they would be very revealing and purely cosmetic for those very reasons. As far as the explore of the sets goes–this is a materialistic, consumer-mad, hermetically sealed society that the film portrays–of course its going to recognize like a shopping mall. The film is not exactly an apt representsation of the events in the book (something I wouldn’t mind seeing someday) . Budgetary, time and technological constraints would made doing so impossible at the time. Calm, it holds up well on its have merits. One last note: Am I the only one who finds the fancy account angle of this movie touching? It’s entertaining to eye two people experiencing worship for the first time, especially in the world portrayed in Logan’s Accelerate, where people don’t have lasting emotional ties to one another. What the esteem fable kind of implies is that this is the first time in hundreds of years that people have belief and felt in terms of strong emotions for each other. In an era like our gain where the word is bandied about so remarkable as to be meaningless, it’s refreshing to behold a future where its meaning is rediscovered.
Logan’s Rush started off with a dazzling astounding concept–(courtesy of science fiction writers William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson) what if our youth obsessed society establish everyone over the age of 30 (21 in the unusual) to death as a means of population control? This film version of a classic cautionary narrative is intermittantly successful. David Zelag Goodman’s screenplay condenses and changes around several key characters. Goodman’s script essentially refocuses the current into The Fugitive in the future. In the new modern Francis (played brilliantly by the gradual Richard Jordan) and the Used Man character (played as befuddled by Peter Ustinov) were one and the same. You’ll need to read the current to look why this was an critical altered status point.
Additionally, Sanctuary did exist in the unusual while here it’s sure that it’s something of an urban chronicle. While these situation points might not seem distinguished, altering them radically reshaped the film. Unexcited, it’s sure that the film’s director, producer and screenwriter (respectively, Michael Anderson the leisurely Saul David and Goodman) wanted to streamline what could have been a confusing region if not layed out correctly.
The basic plot–In the future our society is enclosed in domes. As a means to control the population, everyone has a life clock crystal on their hand. When you advance 30 you have the option to become “renewed” in a ceremony attended by the citizens. Logan (Michael York) and Francis (Richard Jordan) are Sandmen who hunt, capture/or waste runners (people who settle to not go through renewal and try to rush) .

After one incident, Logan is debriefed by the computer that runs the city. The runner wore a symbol representing life. During this debriefing he is send undercover to become a “runner” and glean out 1) Who is unhurried the network that tries to rep people out of the city and 2) If sanctuary exists. Logan’s life clock is prematurely archaic to 30. He contacts a girl who he had met before on the circuit (a system where people can “dial up” others for casual sex) who he had seen wearing the same symbol. Despite her better judgement, she elects to wait on him rush.
Francis, shy that his friend is running, elects to scamper him and either bring him benefit for renewal or raze him.
The film is quite reliable despite some gaping spot holes. Michael York gives a impassioned performance as Logan 5. Jenny Agutter is enthralling as Jessica. Richard Jordan shines as Logan’s faded partner Francis who feels betrayed and hunts Logan down. Roscoe Lee Brown is exceptional in his cameo as the demented cyborg Box. Michael Anderson, Jnr. gives a nice cameo performance as the surgeon hired to alter Logan’s appearence. Made for $6 million, Logan’s Accelerate looked quite sterling when it was released in 1976. The symbolism of having Francis and Logan fight in the House of Representatives with an American flag was quite evident given the year of release (1976) .

In many respects the themes in the film are more timely than ever. The obsession with youth, looking respectable and plastic surgery have arrive to interpret our culture in the 21st Century. The only thing missing from the film are botox injections.
Jerry Goldsmith’s gleaming net is a highlight of the film. Like his gain for Planet of the Apes, Goldsmith chose to go with a mix of sythesizers and orchestra to picture the city of the future. He eschews cliches in his music and the various themes and cues are at turns suspenseful and witty. The optical effects are blooming pleasurable given the time. The matte paintings by Albert Whitlock are outstanding and fairly convincing. The miniatures are a mixed bag. They didn’t view completely convincing in 1976 nor do they today. Fragment of the predicament has to do with the fact that waters don’t fare well when placed in miniatures. You can’t miniaturize the bubbles and water drops. Also, the spend of the miniatures in combination with live action is quite grainy due to the film stock and amount of composites. Mild, if you can suspend your disbelief, you’ll indulge in the film despite its limitations.
Logan’s Accelerate attempted to squawk an adult cautionary record in a world of light weight escapist movies. It’s a commendable film and the film makers frequently bite off more than they can chew. I’d rather have a film that’s too ambitious than not at all.
Still, I savor the ambitions if not the execution. It’s nice to finally have this graceful if flawed movie on DVD. The transfer is quite profitable although the print has a number of flaws. There’s also quite a bit of dirt evident on the print. These probably could have been cleared up with a inform digital transfer. Additionally, the 5.1 soundtrack occasionally sounds “tinny” and when played in the stereo format can be quite difficult to hear.
The extras are minute but nice. The commentary by director Michael Anderson and Michael York is quite noble and informative. A pity the terrific actor Richard Jordan isn’t around any longer to give us his perspective. I would have liked to glimpse a original retrospective documentary on the making of the film. It’s not likely to happen, though as no one is going to champion this film at the expensive of other newer projects (particulary since producer Saul David is gone) . The featurette included is the unusual one made to promote the film. It’s actually handsome decent given the age and purpose of it. The trailer is included as well. The disc is a dual sided single layer DVD with the widescreen and pan & scan versions on the same disc.

The visuals are nothing short of dazzling, especially in HD. It’s worth the download honest to check out how beautifully the cg animation is rendered. The action scenes are tight, with Matrix-esque dumb motion shots, crazy camera angles and an emphasis on heavy gun play, indicative of producer John Woo’s style. One drawback on the cg animation though is that when characters interact with each other physically it seems awkward. They don’t feel like they are touching. I imagine that when you develop something with animation like that you’d hasten into clipping issues when the characters intereact heavily. In fact, it reminded me of prick scenes from Eternal Sonata, a video game using similar animation techniques but on a bigger scale obviously.

The anecdote is an upgrade from the first movie, although the main antagonist borrows heavily from classic Star Scuttle villain, the Borg. There’s even a Borg like cube of sorts that serves as it’s foundation. The subplot consists of a triangle between Deunan, Briareos (the main protagonists from the first movie) and Tereus, a biroid created mostly from Briareos’s DNA who becomes Deunan’s original partner after her lover falls in battle.
If I were to do a criticism I’d say that the main antagonist was revealed a tad too leisurely, making the final resolution a dinky anti-climactic. At a runtime of about an hour and 40 minutes I felt like another 20 minutes would have been justified. When it was over, I couldn’t quite acquire it at first. Also, and this may be a estimable thing, events from the first movie go almost completely without mention. This means that you won’t have to have seen the first one to savor this, but at the same time there is a lack of continuity for those that did.

All in all though, it’s a great film and worth a look.
The first Appleseed film (from 2004) was quite a treat. The cell-shaded CG graphics looked very favorable for the time. Complementing this distinct standout aspect was an piquant chronicle and an beneficial soundtrack. It’s worth noting that the epic, in particular, felt like a genuinely fresh re-animation of sci-fi concepts.
Fast forward to today and we have the sequel, Ex Machina. It’s stunning simple to separate what works and doesn’t in Machina:
GRAPHICS:
The level of detail in the graphics has improved dramatically, and characters study less like geometric objects with textures painted on and more like suited people. The cityscapes are even more impressive. Furthermore, the action is more frequent and looks even slicker.
My two gripes with the visuals are these: First, in what is all too accepted in action movies like this, the best scene is the first one. Hands down. I don’t understand why so many directors feel the need to frontload their movies. I will say that the movie is less guilty of this than its predecessor. Second, movement outside of action scenes peaceful looks a bit jerky. Some might fault mo-cap technology, but for my money, Final Fantasy: Advent Children boasted some powerful believable movement.
STORY/WRITING:
Here’s where Ex Machina falls apart. The chronicle here isn’t anything you haven’t seen executed better in anime/other entertainment. Compared to the situation of the first movie- which created a new sci-fi framework, this one felt like a filler episode. The villain was cliche, the chronicle far less complex/meaningful than the first, and any intrigue or mystery the legend might yet have held was ruined by the immoral writing. The film tasks itself with letting the viewer in on a number of concepts considerable to the site, but rather than integrate them seamlessly into the dialog, it bashes the viewer over the head with them.
MUSIC:
The soundtrack wasn’t bad- I unbiased didn’t see it most of the time. This constitutes a diminutive letdown considering how often I return to the soundtrack from the first movie.
OVERALL: Ex Machina is a notice to sight and warrants a blu-ray steal. Unbiased don’t query it to expand distinguished on the ideas introduced in the first Appleseed.

The Muppets Messed-up DVD![]()
The Muppets Take Manhattan is the third Muppet film and although not the strongest, it’s sure to entertain the entire family. The story follows the Muppets on their quest to get their show, “Manhattan Melodies”, produced on Broadway. It’s a terrific story that hits at the core of what the Muppets are all about, namely putting on a show. Sure the music isn’t as memorable as that in the first muppet movie (except “I’m Gonna Always Love You”), but you can’t help appreciating the lengths to which the Muppets will go to entertain you. Singing chickens? Got ‘em! Frogs with hair? Check! Unbelieveable action sequence? Of course, and it’s unbelieveable in more ways than one! A Muppet staple is the cameo and they abound in this film. Everyone from Liza Minelli to Art Carney sets some screen time. Joan Rivers is particularly funny in her over the top make-up scene with Miss Piggy. For all you Trekkers, Gates McFadden even appears as a secretary to a con man!
The film is great entertainment, but this DVD has problems. First of all the digital tranfer isn’t that good. Plenty of older films like Fantasia look stunning on DVD, but not this film. There is a graininess to the picture that can be discracting and artifacts abound. Sound is presented in only a mono format. Was the original film released this way? I don’t know, but if so some mention should be made on the packaging, otherwise it feels like we’re getting ripped off. On a positive note the film is presented in both a formatted and widescreen version. As for the other bonuses, there is a strange feature called “Muppetisms” that I can’t really figure out. They are minute, minute and a half long segments featuring one or two muppets just goofing off and benign wacky. Not too sure what it’s all about, but it was fun to watch – once. By far the best bonus feature is the interview with Jim Henson. He talks a bit about the making of the film, how decisions are made and such. It’s an incredible peek into the creation of a Muppet film. There is one glarig problem though – the chapter stops are just little minute or so long bits of the interview. To see the whole thing you have to continually stop and start up again. It’s a big mistake and makes watching the entire thing quite a chore.
My final word on this edition is buy it for the widescreen version of the movie only. The transfer isn’t that good, the bonuses aren’t that great, but the film itself is a real treat. Not the strongest Muppet film, but not the weakest either. If you have the video and don’t care about widescreen, you can easily (and sadly) pass on this DVD. If not, pick this up for a fun romp around Manhattan that you and your family are sure to enjoy again and again.
This movie is so amazing, it will change lives!![]()
“Muppets Take Manhattan” is my favorite movie of all time, and yes, I’m above the age of 6. This movie gem from Jim Henson and company is nothing short of brillant. It provides a humor that is wonderful for children, yet not insulting to adults. There is a underlying humor that adults will appreciate. The muppet characters stand out in this movie, and it is especially nice to see the movie incorporates most of the main muppet favorites. While Kermit is the main protagonist, other muppets steal the show, such as Miss Piggy, whose temper tantrums are hilarious. The muppets are wonderful together as well, and the songs performed in the movie are classic and very catchy. I also love the human aspect of the movie. One of my favorite things about muppets are that they have always interacted with human society, and no one seems to care. And when the muppets are cavorting around Manhattan, the human element adds a realistic, as well as funny, touch. honestly, “Muppets Take Manhattan” is my favorite movie. It is funny, has great songs, great setting in New York City, and it has a great message to always keep trying no matter what. It is a movie to be enjoyed by all ages, and trust me, it won’t disappoint!
The Muppets storm NYC and try to get their play on B’Way.![]()
I first saw this movie when I was a little child, and I just saw it again last month at my friend’s house. It was just as good as it was when I first saw it more than a decade ago! If you love the Muppets you can not miss this. If you hate the Muppets, watch this and you will love them. It’s a great movie for all ages. When you watch the scene when Kermit goes to the producer’s office, decked out in an afro and medallion, I strongly urge you not to drink or eat because you just might choke. But all this is just my opinion…see it and judge for yourself.

Movie Title: Star! Star! is available for streaming or downloading. |
Julie Andrews portrays British musical theatre star Gertrude Lawrence in “Star!” (1968) . Because it was crafted by the same team responsible for “West Side Legend” and “The Sound of Music,” most notably director Robert Wise and producer Saul Chaplin, mammoth things were expected of “Star!” Dismissed by most critics and overshadowed by Barbra Streisand’s “Laughable Girl,” released the very same year, “Star!” is a fantastic movie musical soley due to the performance of Julie Andrews, who delivers a exquisite, tour-de-force. Andrews performs a dozen major musical numbers, ranging from seedy music halls circa WWI to Lawrence’s stage triumph in the Kurt Weill-Ira Gershwin musical play “Lady in the Unlit” in 1941. The fetch represents some of the best of the Gershwins, Cole Porter, and Noel Coward, the latter winningly played by Coward’s godson, Daniel Massey. His performance alone is reason enough to gape the film. However, it the skilled, winning performance of Julie Andrews that makes this long (3 hours) musical biography worth watching. Julie not only sings but dances and acts to perfection, displaying immense versatility. This film would be most animated to those who fancy Julie Andrews and the by-gone era of the musical theatre between the two world wars. The film suffers from being somewhat overblown and poorly paced – the thin screenplay gives the viewer miniature or no insight into what made Gertrude Lawrence really tick, but Julie Andrews delievers the goods – and then some.
Feverish debate always surrounds the correct merits of this controversial 1968 musical. Thoughts seem to be continually divided as to whether “Star!”,was the “the film that deservedly sank the career of Julie Andrews”, or that it was “the greatest fragment of work Julie Andrews has ever done on film”. From the moment of this film’s modern release in 1968 they are the two most hotly contested viewpoints about this Robert Wise production that reteamed him with his “The Sound of Music”, leading lady Julie Andrews. I tend to judge after repeated viewings that “Star!”,contains some of the best work by a musical comedy actress in the whole 1960′s decade and certainly is one of the crowning achievements in the acting career of Julie Andrews despite the films lack of financial success. Why wasn’t this film then the success many feel it ought to have been? Firstly by behind 1968 the musical genre was definately going out of style with the advent of remarkable more permissive “socially questioning” dramas such as “Midnight Cowboy”, and “Easy Rider”, and the period saw a very high number of mountainous budget movies like “Paint Your Wagon”, and “Sweet Charity”, not being successful at the Box Office. Also the role of the feisty, nefarious mouthed Gertrude Lawrence was a colossal departure from the usual type of role that had endeared Julie Andrews to movie goers. While different from her roles in “The Sound of Music”, and “Thoroughly Novel Millie”, “Star!”, needs to be judged on its have individual merits and is a marvellous showcase for the multi talents of Julie Andrews.
Undertaking a film biography of such a complex and multifaceted lady as Gertrude Lawrence who was one of the shiny lights of the stage in the early years of the 20th Century would have been a daunting task for any producer to undertake. “Star!”, in an almost 3 hour running time however succeeds beautifully in tracing Lawrence’s very humble beginnings in Clapham, London where she spent more time ducking ripe fruit being thrown at her on stage than singing, legal through to her toast of Broadway successes in “Private Lives”, and “Lady in the Dusky”. The production is rich in graceful musical numbers where the beefy force of the modern talent of Julie Andrews is amply in evidence. “Limehouse Blues”, the fine “Parisian Pierrot”, “Piccadilly” and my personal favourite the lovely finale of “Jenny” really are in a class of their bear as far as 1960′s musicals go. Julie Andrews is superlative as Gertrude Lawrence and despite many people at the time feeling she was miscast and that the film overall misrepresented Lawrence, I contain she does admirably as the brassy cockney entertainer who from sheer force of personality reached the top of the entertainment world. A fatal mistake is to observe “Star!”, expecting to discover a cramped variation on Mary Poppins or Maria Von Trapp. Here Julie Andrews creates a totally different type of character who is in turn amusing, exasperating, tragic, self centred and reflective, all in the one package. Her progression through the film from frantic twenties flapper to a goddess of the depression era of the 30′s, and then a ancient self assured leading lady in the 40′s is achieved with a certain gaze for what is suitable for the characters progression by Andrews. Daniel Massey plays Lawrence’s life long friend Noel Coward in a masterful performance that is among his best ever and in his interpretation of Coward he manages to be respectful while composed showing the spacious wit and sardonic viewer of life that Coward was reported to be.
“Star!”,has the feel of an weak fashioned musical comedy about it and I gain that one of the film’s most titillating qualities. Entertainment and history are intermingled through the innovative expend of newsreel footage of the time and reenactments of scenes from Lawrence’s vast successes on stage in “Private Lives”. The film is rich with lavish production numbers with music penned by such illustrious artists as the Gershwins and Cole Porter. The “Jenny”, musical number which comes at the conclusion of the film in particular is startling in it’s construction and Julie Andrews displays an energy and fluidity here that is a revelation as far as dance sequences go. Nominated for seven Academy Awards “Star!”, really came along at the contemptible time and another musical extravaganza that year “Droll Girl”, featuring an astounding film debut for Barbra Striesand totally eclipsed it both in financial success and awards. Visually the film is a exact treat for the viewing seek as Julie Andrews wears an astonishing wardrobe throughout the film which grows increasingly lavish over the 40 year running period of the film. Designed by Donald Brooks, Julie Andrews had the rare honour of having the largest single wardrobe created for an actress in the one film up to that time.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Star!! Click Here
I always feel that “Star!”, in some respects gave us an early scrutinize of the Julie Andrews that amazed the world in her sizable comeback film of 1981 “Victor/Victoria”. As Gertrude Lawrence she is in turn extroverted, tender, regretful of many of her actions, and always the live wire. Rarely have I heard her in better sigh than in “Star!”, and her musical numbers in most respects are far more difficult ones than in her earlier musicals. Neglected and scorned at the time of its release objective when the press seemed to turn against her, “Star!”, certainly deserves a better press. Combined with Julie Andrews next pains the monumental “Darling Lili”, which suffered the same fate at the Box Office in 1970, both are blamed for ending Andrews’ career in movies. Both in fact are due for a reassessment and no film has displayed the original abilities of Julie Andrews to better advantage than “Star!”. Do yourself a favour and recall a contemplate at this unfairly maligned film some time, you wont regret it.

With Season One, “Batman Beyond” had gained a current following of Batfans by successfully expanding the Batman mythos with the introduction of novel, younger Dusky Knight Terry McGinnis. The presence of used Bruce Wayne as mentor to the modern hero for a unusual era not only provided the series with a linchpin, but also allowed the producers to do something current with the character, but serene discontinue just to the Bruce Wayne/Batman sage.
For Season Two, the series creators’ intent, according to producer Bruce Timm, was to focus a small bit more on Terry and a cramped bit less on Bruce, believing [from focus groups they'd done with the series, and their hold instincts] that the teenage kids watching the present were distinguished more enthusiastic in Terry than in Bruce, given it was TERRY’S demonstrate now. To that destroy, Terry reluctantly gets his contain confidant/sidekick in schoolmate Maxine “Max” Gibson (Cree Summer), a computer genius who stumbles upon his secret identity in “Hidden Agenda.” “You call me Robin, and I’m outta here,” Max warns. Terry coyly responds with “No jam…Alfred.” To her credit, Max [at given times] proved to be quite useful to Terry, covering for him to girlfriend Dana; babysitting younger brother Matt; plus employing her technical skills. Also included in this station is “Once Burned” featuring the return of Melanie/Ten (Terry’s enjoy Selina Kyle/Catwoman) and the Royal Flush Gang; “Blood Sport”, “Sneak Survey”, and runaway robot “Zeta” which was spun-off into the short-lived series “The Zeta Project.”
