Old Style Hollywood Glam in Gorgeous DVD Transfer
This is an exceptional DVD transfer of an exceptional movie. Criterion has done a magnificent job of restoring Charade to its colorful glory. The film is presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The print is clear, crisp, and beautiful to behold. You feel as if you can reach out and touch the actors.

And what actors! The film features the dashing older version of Cary Grant and the youthful gamine Audrey Hepburn, with enough chemistry between them to ignite a fireworks factory. The plot is a convoluted and flimsy trifle about cold war spy shenanigans, with cases of mistaken identity and episodes of grave danger for Miss Audrey. But Cary, the classic good guy in cad’s clothing, is there to save the day. In addition to which he provides chaste romance that sizzles beneath the civility.

Audio commentary is provided by director Stanley Donen and screenwriter Peter Stone. While interesting and funny in spots, it does drag a bit over the length of the film. It may be better to check it out when you find something in the film that you would like to hear dissected. Otherwise, you’d be better to stick with the delightful, corny dialogue spoken in the dulcet tones of Cary and Audrey. The soundtrack music is to also to be savored, done up in classic ’60s spy movie style by the movie maestro Henry Mancini.

If you have nothing to do on a rainy day and own a DVD player, this is the movie you want to have on hand to pop in the machine and deliver you from care. It’s a keeper (and it comes in a keeper case!).

Criterion scores again!
I got this DVD for Christmas and I wasn’t disappointed. Stanley Donen, director of musicals such as “Singin’ In The Rain” starring Gene Kelly, brought together Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn (who looks luminous, as always) in this wonderfully-written story about a Parisian widow (Hepburn) who is being pursued by three dangerous men (two of which are played by George Kennedy – an excellent “heavy” – and James Coburn at his most menacing) who want to find out about a large sum of money her dead husband supposedly had. Grant is the helpful stranger but eventually you begin to wonder: is he working with these men? Does he want the money for himself? Or is he really the handsome, older man Audrey finds herself falling in love with?

Enhanced by a lush score by the late Henry Mancini, photographed beautifully in Paris and containing first-rate acting and deliciously wicked dialogue by writer Peter Stone, “Charade” is a film that should be in every serious DVD collection. Grant is older but better, like fine wine, and Ms. Hepburn … well there have been millions of words used to describe her and I can’t add to them other than to say the world lost a marvelous talent at her death.

You’ll enjoy “Charade” for a long, long time.

Nothing is really what it seems…
And that includes the quality of this release. It just goes to show that you can take a great screenplay from a great book, cast some stellar Hollywood performers at their peaks, add clear expert direction, stunning location sets, stir in a Mancini score, and still end up with a painfully disappointing experience. Especially when you consider the promise of the new DVD format, and today’s digital remastering techniques. Re-released through several small-time distributors (Front Row Entertainment of Canada, etc) Charade has been reduced to a sad caricature of it’s original beauty. By using worn-out, poor-quality source for the transfer to DVD these distributors have marketed a product that is not only inferior to the existing VHS tape versions, but an insult to the DVD format. To see this type of travesty is to know the real tragedy of copyright expiration and it’s resulting offspring–corporate greed at the expense of art, businesses reaping profits at the expense of unaware consumers, and worst of all…sometimes the loss of great examples of cinema magic. Thank goodness Criterion was able to resurrect what appears to be close to if not original film, and produce a release of Charade that shows what DVD is all about. If you haven’t seen Charade, I won’t spoil it by telling you the plot here. But whether you’ve seen it or not, I will tell you this: Spend the money and get the Criterion version for DVD, or save your money and buy the VHS tape version. Avoid the budget DVD versions at all costs–they’re no bargain…just a waste. Enjoy!

Jacques Becker’s LE TROU (THE HOLE) is one of the most intense, grand and thrilling crime movie in film history.

Men–convicts–in a prison cell status a dynamic elope by digging a hole (hence the title) in their prison cell. This is the basic space of it, that’s all. And the dramatic arena is naturally very limited; basically everything in a confinement of a prison. The actions are also mainly shrimp to the act of digging.

By deliberately limiting his cinematic palette to bare-bone simplicity, Jacques Becker weaves out a complex web of human camaraderie and conflicts. You have to trust one another to commit this kind of flee, but at the same time, can you really trust these fellow inmates? All the dramatic ellements concentrate into this fundamental put a question to about human relationship. And from there florishies a blooming, awesome drama of wild, strong men, naturally with the currents of their gain vulnerabilities underneath, which quite often finds its blueprint to burst in front of your eyes.

A generous ensemble cast including some of the finest character actors in french cinema and one man who actually experienced this epic (Jean Keraudy, who introduces the film as his beget narrative) creates an extraoridinary psychological as well as physical realism.

And the harsh, stark black&white cinematography can be easily pointed out as one of the highest achievement in attempting to get an imediate realistic experience as a cinematic imagery in film history.

Based on a correct epic, “LE TROU” is a 42 year customary French thriller that is itsy-bitsy known in the U.S. but is being (re) discovered by videophiles as a tense, sweat-inducing masterpiece. The position is amazingly simple: Five guys in a prison cell awaiting trial, set an speed by digging a hole (“le trou”) into the Parisian sewers. It’s in French with optional, easy to read subtitles and there’s a six page booklet with two spirited essays. Thanks to Criterion, this grand film has been plucked from obscurity, beautifully mastered, and is now finding the appreciative audience it deserves. Don’t miss it.

“Run” is handsome top-notch. It’s predictable, to be positive. In fact, some of it reminds me of Disney’s other original dog film, “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” in that a dog is removed from a somewhat priviliged background and forced to live like a regular dog. Like any pleasant animal movie, Spin meets friends along the plot. Upstaging Perambulate is Rhino, a hamster who worships Travel and moves around in a runt plastic ball.

What Disney has succeeded in doing is injecting a slight heart relieve into their product. It’s something they’ve really not been able to successfully do since “Lilo and Stitch.” There’s a really touching scene between Stride and a stray cat named Mittens that not only captures the heart of the film, but really makes you mediate twice about animal abandonment!

Performances are fine all around and the animation is top notch. For some reason, I feel that Disney collected wants to compete against their possess partner Pixar. Peaceful, the characters aren’t quite as multidimensional. And considering the hero’s quandary to win wait on to his owner Penny, Penny really gets microscopic time in this. The film has a fun road movie quality and the film makers seemed to have fun with the action sequences. It’s a fun peer, but aesthetic far from Pixar quality.

“Prance” really blew me away; this is the first time that I have seen a CGI film that shows a level of mastery that allows the visual artistry of the film to be the driver rather than the capabilities of the computer. The characters have the typical CGI look–extremely well rendered, with the 3D type stare you’d question. However, the backgrounds have the spy of a musty painting. Art Director Paul Felix should be commended for this mixing of styles which works out extremely well. The overall lighting, colors, and style of this film are its hallmark in my view. The myth is really not anything that will blow you away; in fact, it is somewhat predictable; however, with the characterizations, action sequences, visual quality, and the vocal talents slow the characters, “Jog” becomes a must-see.

In a nutshell: Skedaddle (John Travolta) is a super-hero canine…at least in his hold mind and to TV viewers everywhere. In order to protect his performance and retain it “exact,” TV execs have sheltered Wander and he believes that what he accomplishes on his demonstrate is all done on his gain, not through special effects. Inch is deeply devoted to his human costar, Penny, a small girl (Miley Cyrus), who is also deeply devoted to him as well. Mistakenly thinking that Penny is in pain at the hands of the TV villains, Flow escapes his trailer and finds himself in the genuine world, where his neat powers are not so tidy. He accidentally gets shipped to NYC, and thinks that the pink styrofoam peanuts clinging to his fur are the cause of his loss of power. With the befriend of a hamster named Rhino (Stamp Walton) and a street-tough kitten, Mittens (Susie Essman, who is Amazing!), Walk must regain his blueprint befriend to Hollywood and his beloved Penny. It is a sage of growth, maturity, and love; again, nothing really earth-shattering, but in this recycled anecdote that we have seen in other movies, it is done so well that you forgive the studio for its predictability.

BONUS MATERIAL:

“Clean Rhino” (4:27) –Rhino the hamster gets the spotlight in this keen short focusing on him. Cute!

Deleted Scenes: 2 deleted scenes (“Dog Fight in Vegas” and “River Sequence”) with introductions by directors Chris Williams and Byron Howard. They are both shown in storyboard originate and neither is really missed from the final recount. They were not venerable mainly because they wanted to heighten the emotional level of Scamper finding out about his lack of powers.

“In Session with John Travolta & Miley Cyrus” (:59) –This one is like a blip on the radar…very short! Interviews with both stars as they score ready to affirm the duet from the movie “I Notion I Lost You.” They are truly a mutual admiration society, with Travolta comparing Cyrus to the appeal of Olivia Newton John in “Grease.”

Bolt’s Be-Awesome Mission–High def video game is somewhat more exciting and fun than the typical Disney video game extra. Launch at level 1, The Burning Warehouse and glimpse how far you can progress! Takes a small bit of mastering of the controls on the remote.

“A Original Breed of Directors: A Filmmakers’ Glide” (4:34) — The two directors discuss what it was like to manufacture “Accelerate,” and how John Lasseter was a expansive mentor and guide in the process. Fun to survey the substantial plastic hamster ball that the animators played in to diffuse tensions around the office. Obviously expansive camaraderie was apparent with the team, as they also stopped shaving in unison during the last 9-10 weeks of work on the film.

“Act, Bellow! The Voices of Lag” (9:47) –Always moving to explore how each actor has to represent their lines independently, making the process of playing off the other characters next to impossible. Really takes talent to manufacture it work. Travolta began in voicework (commercials), so this was a return to his roots. He comments that “You can only contribute your instruct…the most engaging this was seeing the marriage with the animation.” Tag Walton, a Disney animation team member, did the scratch grunt of Rhino, and was so perfect that he was cast in the final movie. The trusty video of him finding this news out is touching to search for as you discover his unbridled enthusiasm. Susie Essman (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), the declare of Mittens, was mad to explain her diagram acting skills, but was told by the Disney team to be herself. They wanted a tough kitten with a Novel York accent. As Susie says, “It’s objective me.” Disappointingly enough, she never met Travolta during her recording sessions, even though practically every scene in the movie involves her character interacting with Travolta’s.

Bolt Art Galleries: Character Do, Color Script, Storyboard Art, and Visual Development. Distinct is improbable to recognize this immense pieces of art filling up a widescreen high-def TV. Felix wanted the painterly looks of traditionally captivating Disney films, and he definitely succeeds. Animated to see this featurette.

SPECS:

Video: 1080p High Def/1.78:1. Disney is to be commended for having high-def extras as well. Whereas most studios go to the usual crappy video quality, Disney consistently upgrades even the extras. Especially scrumptious for the video game.

Audio: English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio (48 kHz/24-bit) and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital. I actually had to turn the volume down a bit, as this movie really gives the speakers a work-out. Sound comes out of all your speakers, and with a number of action sequences, the subwoofer really rumbles! Extremely impressive! Subtitles: English SDH, Spanish.

“This can’t be good, we’re on top of the monument . . “
One of the best of Hitchcock (although as far as his films go, Hitch probably has the best track record of any director living or dead). This film is basically the original “Fugitive” and follows pretty closely the plot to his “The 39 Steps” from 1935 – a man is mistaken for a CIA agent and is caught in a “deadly game of cat and mouse,” as it were. I LOVE the music and the visuals that start out the film – it makes me wish I had been alive to see it in a movie theater in the 50′s. And although this film is over 2 hours long, there’s no way you can be bored – the suspense is so intense you’ll be chewing your nails the whole time (I did the first time I saw it). Cary Grant is excellent as always, James Mason plays one of the most sinister of Hitchcock’s villains (I would LOVE to have this guy’s voice) and Eva Marie Saint looks gorgeous and plays her part well. I also enjoyed seeing Martin Landau in an early role as one of James Mason’s henchmen and Jessie Royce Landis (the mother from “To Catch a Thief”) as Grant’s mother (although both were very near the same age at the time). And I love any film score by Bernard Herrmann – this guy should have had a mantle covered with awards, but as luck would have it, most of his scores went not only un-awarded but un-nominated (as this one did). By all means, if you don’t own it, pick it up today – and by the way, good job for FINALLY releasing it on DVD, MGM.

Brilliant film making.
With this film, Alfred Hitchcock set out to top himself and get back on top after the failure of VERTIGO; he did just that. NORTH BY NORTHWEST is automatically a classic with the acting by Cary Grant (his fourth and final film with Hitchcock), Eva Maria Saint, James Mason, Leo G. Carroll (another one of Hithcock’s favorites), and young Martin Landau (in his film debut), the amazing set pieces (the UN murder, the cropduster sequence, and the climax atop Mt. Rushmore), Bernard Hermann’s music score, and the classic work of the camera by the Master of Suspense. But this DVD’s extras really add to the film. It includes a documentary hosted by Saint (“Destination Hitchcock,” not “The Man in Lincoln’s Nose” as listed on this site), an audio commentary by screenwriter Ernest Lehman, two theatrical trailers (a standard trailer and one featuring Hitchcock), a TV Spot, an isolated music audio track and the film itself remastered in Dolby 5.1 Audio and 1.66:1 widescreen anamorphic format. The only problem is it comes in a snap case like all Warners DVDs, not allowing a booklet with production notes. But this DVD is a must buy, especially if you’re a fan of Hitch. It’s also a note of interest for 007 fans (like myself). This film brought about spy thrillers and you should compare the cropduster sequence in this film to the helicopter sequence in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE.

Spy VS Spy..a la Hitch
Definitive Hitch! Everything about this film says Hitch. The musical score(Bernard Hermann) spells trouble even in the opening credits,the camera angles are signature, his favorite actors(Cary Grant Eva Marie Saint, Leo G. Carroll),and the edge of your seat story. All the things we love.
It gets better though, if it weren’t for the style of clothes and cars, you would think this film was made yesterday. Warner Bros. has made a beautiful transfer of this 1959 classic, “North by Northwest”, onto DVD.
A little of the story though for those who have not seen it(not too much though,don’t want to spoil anything for you). It’s a case of mistaken identity. Grant’s. He is taken for a goverment agent by some counterspies, abducted, framed for murder and nobody believes his story. He goes on the run from the police as well as the thugs.While on the run he meets the beautiful Eva Marie Saint and sparks fly between them. (Anytime there is romance in a Hitch film you do not need an R rating to feel the passion!)So what’s her part in all this? Why isn’t the goverment helping him? Is he being crossed?Doublecrossed? Maybe even triple crossed? Find out as the thrilling chase goes from New York to South Dakota. And check out all the great scenery and landmarks along the way, as Cary travels by train,is chased by a plane(very scary stuff)and ends up atop of Mount Rushmore.
It’s one of Director Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest thrillers.Grant,Saint, and Carroll, well, they shine as usual.And along for the ride also thrilling us are James Mason and a young Martin Landau. There’s also Jessie Royce Landis as Grant’s mother who’s wit matches his quip for quip. She’s great.
Now back to the DVD. It should be the poster child for why we love DVDs now. I have never seen this film look so good. Picture sharp, widescreen(matted) gives us great views, and the soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 is amazing for a film of this age.It’s a film to be watched over and over(and now that it’s on DVD you don’t have to worry about it wearing out!)If you can’t get enough there’s several features, the making of,audio commentary,still gallery,audio only if you want to hear just the score,trailers, and subtitles.Hitch fans..you’ll love it.
Oh by the way…do you know where Hitch makes his cameo appearance in this one? Of course you do, but just in case…don’t miss the first 5 minutes.

Quick Facts: I’m 27, been a fan of Dragon Ball Z since 1999, and a fan of anime since 1992. I’m very picky about uncut anime, and I always choose the new aspect ratio. I disfavor English dubs as most any anime fan does. This is my first review of a DVD.

Video: FUNimations claims this is a widescreen transfer from the current video. Dragonball Z fans are screaming the modern video was cropped to obtain it widescreen. I’ve spent the last 2 days with WinDVD and Photoshop to confirm or disprove this. Anyone who does image editing knows that cropping a 4:3 image to 16:9 can be really dramatic. After watching 67 episodes of this unique release from FUNimation, I wasn’t completely convinced about the transfer being cropped from it’s fresh 4:3 aspect ratio. Dragonball Z fans are lawful to say the widescreen transfer is cropped, but they also would need to admit to that the 4:3 broadcast we fans know and esteem was also cropped! The widescreen transfer has extended video on the left and true that was cropped for the unusual 4:3 TV broadcast some 18 years ago. A time when 4:3 televisions were standard. In unique times, 16:9 televisions have taken over, and we’re noteworthy more widescreen oriented. The unusual animation aspect ration I got when I was done sizing and layering the images over each other from the 4:3 and 16:9 gave me a 16:11 aspect ratio. This my Dragon Ball Z fans… Seems to be the Recent size. 16:11 though won’t inspect all that gigantic on any TV status. Also makes sense though since animators earn the recent larger so when transferring the animation to video, there’s room to play with so you don’t have random spots missing on the sides, top and bottom. So if you have to ask yourself if this is a legitmate 16:9 transfer or some 4:3 cropped (cut/edited) video, the accurate acknowledge is… It’s a legimate 16:9 transfer. Both the 4:3 and the 16:9 are cropped from the recent… In the extinguish, it depends on personal preference.

The video was supposedly cleaned up, and the colors remastered. Personally, For the most allotment, I spy an increased brightness on the video, which actually does perceive better. They did trim up the video and removed grain and video noise. All in all, the remastered report looks better compared to the new DVDs that FUNimation released.

Audio: I can’t say powerful about the sound quality since I’m using my computer for the time being. Unprejudiced moved, and have yet to hook up my home theater again. FUNimation is releasing this with 3 settings. The fresh Japanese language and music. Nothing seems to have changed between the unique DVDs and this release. For those who gape DBZ subbed only, I inspect no change at all. The second option is the English dub with the Japanese music. This is actually quite challenging, and I give credit for this addition! In this rare instance, I have always like the dubs for Dragon Ball Z, so having the option to leer it with the fresh music is broad. If that isn’t enough though, this novel map to gaze the series is in Dolby Digital 5.1. Then there’s the third option which is the English dub with the US music done by Bruce Faulconer in stereo. I guess doing this in 5.1 would have taken too mighty time.

The dub was also redone for whatever reason. After comparing the recent DVDs vs the modern ones, the older ones sometimes seem a bit more consistent with what was originally being said. One hasty example would be this…

Japanese Audio: Vegeta “I mumble”

Original English Dub: Vegeta “I guess so”

New English Dub: Vegeta “Shut up!”

Why FUNimation went out of the blueprint to do a whole unusual dub, I have no plan… This seems to be wasteful of production time, or maybe they can’t exhaust the recent dub anymore. Why FUNimation does anything at times is beyond my idea. They have time to redub the series, but they can’t obtain the English dub with the US music in 5.1…

The menus on these discs are light years ahead of the current DVDs FUNimation released, with worthy more chapter points, and the MARATHON option which allows you to notice all the episodes on a disc straight through without the opening/closing between the episodes. More like watching a movie than episode after episode, having to skip after each one.

The packaging of the discs in the case is rather nice. Seems upon collection the series, you can line them up for a tremendous “DRAGONBALL Z” title! Each season comes with a little booklet with character information, episode information, etc.

Also want to label that according to FUNimation, this video was remastered on HD 1080/24p. This doesn’t mean the discs are HD and can optimize the novel HDMI 1.3, but it does exhibit that 1080/24p mastering is being done, and we’re probably not far off from seeing this mighty more commonly done and seeing HDDVDs with steady 1080/24p video as TVs are now coming out with HDMI 1.3.

I hope this information helps people looking to possibly steal this series or in the case I’m in, acquire it again for the remastered video and widescreen version. Also powerful more compact compared to dozens of standard DVD cases!

Giving this 4 stars. Why not 5? Because there is smooth room for improvement. The unusual dub doesn’t always seem to fit, and in comparison to the right translation of what was being said, it’s like comparing shaded and white. FUNimation was always lousy about the dub translation, and there’s puny excuse for rebubbing the series and making it honest as awful as the first time around. Making the English Dub with Japanese music 5.1, but the US music in 2.0 is another point away from me. While this doesn’t change anything for me, if they had the time to redub and upscale to 5.1 for the Japanese music, it seems to me they should have taken the time to upscale the US music track too. Sluggish? Additionally, they should have some runt explanation of the widescreen transfer included. The extras on the discs are meaningless.

For the sign these fresh box sets go for… It’s an unbeatable deal for the series and Dragon Ball Z fans.

Let me launch off by saying this…If you are paralyzed about buying this position because of the well known “cropping-issue” don’t be. It’s not nearly as poor as most people manufacture it out to be. I finished watching it and there was not one instance where I could point out that it had in fact been cropped from the current episodes. I had to go online and collect the comparisons to even perceive. So yes there is cropping but in my conception it in no design took away from the incredible experience of watching DBZ.

This I Peruse dvd, and the other one in the series, are aimed at 2 year olds to 6 year olds (plus or minus) . There are a lot of junk kid videos on the market. this definitely is not one of them. it is based on the i gape books. there are lots of shiny and bewitching objects on the shroud to perceive at, and several levels in which kids can play the game (solving problems) — including a very difficult “tidy challenger” game in each episode. The language is unoffensive, the main values illustrated are cooperation, friendship, and sharing. Each dvd has six episodes, divided into three sets of two. The dvd could be improved by making it possible to play all 6 episodes sequentially. but that is a minor glitch. I have a 3 year primitive and a seven year former. both consistently rep something of interest in it to ogle. It is my three year old’s common video.

My son is almost two. I ogle are not his approved but he likes them. I judge he liked the Runaway Robot better.

One ask that should be asked is – Why are there hardly any mafia films based in Italy? Obvious we have the Godfather series with its flashbacks of Sicily, but what about Italy? There are not many and certainly even the best of movie lovers will have peril trying to list one or two if any at all! So here you have one… and its suitable!… in its believe very weird unusual draw.

Contraband is a lost classic that has now been restored here on this DVD. What happens when the world’s foremost gore director decides to effect a crime caper? Acknowledge – more blood than Al Pacino can shoot up in all his gangster flicks set aside together. Although the state is mostly non-existent and certainly there is itsy-bitsy here in terms of brains, there is plenty of action and dread to boot.

Basically the state revolves around several smuggler gang families from Naples all snubbing each other out in the worst possible plan imaginable… and that is all there is it to it really.

Everything on present here is attractive pointless but it is not done badly at all and the acting is a dinky better than what you would put a question to. There are several gore scenes that stand out – a woman getting her face torched to fat melt, a gangster having his head machine gunned to pieces, a mob leader having his throat blown off, plenty backs of the heads flying across the room, cops racy nuns, horses burning up, mobsters getting boiled alive, gangster shot up in church, a vicious rape sequence, intestines being shot out and lots of screaming – all done to the tune of a funky eighties disco beat that is more trustworthy for a …movie. No Sir, you will not salvage this one playing on television any time soon.

If gangsters, guns and gore is your thing then you’ll worship it, but don’t gain this expecting the cinematic flair of what Hollywood has done with this genre.

One of Fulci’s most under-rated movies, CONTRABAND (aka – THE SMUGGLER) also holds the honour of being his most mean-spirited and bloodthirsty movie besides Novel YORK RIPPER. The standard set takes on Mafia bootleggers vs. a perfumed French drug racketeer (THE FRENCH CONNECTION’s Marcel Bozzuffi at his most villainous) .

With its’ fight/chase scenes, brilliantly catchy cheesy disco earn, foul-mouthed dialogue, and hundreds of spent bullet casings, the movie rides on the coat-tails of the then-popular Eurocrime genre. It’s how vicious the film gets that really sets it apart – someone is boiled in an acid pool, another guy’s head is machine-gunned to pieces, a pusher’s face is blowtorched into a molten mess, and there’s a nearly unwatchable sodomy scene that precedes RIPPER’s improper razor torture scene.

The only sincere drawback is that the first half-hour is a bit of a accelerate, but once it starts to accumulate bewitching (with the well-staged assassination of Testi’s brother), it doesn’t let up from there.

Well acted and assured, Fulci demonstrates a confident hand in the action scenes and it’s a shame he didn’t delve more into this genre.
