Pucker up for “Jessica”!star50 tpng Kissing Jessica Stein Review.
“Kissing Jessica Stein,” directed by Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, tells the story of a young, single, Jewish professional woman in New York City (the Jessica of the title, played by Jennifer Westfeldt). She’s fed up with men after a series of bad experiences. Intrigued by a “woman-seeks-woman” personal ad, Jessic decides to give lesbianism a try. The object of her often clumsy affection is Helen (Heather Juergensen), a sexy art gallery manager.

This movie hooked me from its outrageous opening scene, in which Jessica, her mother, and her grandmother bicker and gossip about men during a Day of Atonement service. “Jessica” is a wonderfully funny and sweet film, filled with witty dialogue and some genuinely touching moments. The ensemble cast is superb. Westfeldt and Juergensen shine in the lead roles. Westfeldt, who looks remarkably like Lisa Kudrow, is reminiscent of a young female Woody Allen in this quirky, neurotic role. Juergensen brings an irreverent sensuality to her role. The two are delicious together. Although the whole supporting cast is great, I was particularly moved by Tovah Feldshuh as Jessica’s loving mother.

I’m sure people will be tempted to pigeonhole “Jessica” as a “lesbian” movie, a “New York” movie, and/or a “Jewish” movie. It’s certainly all of these, but its charm and universality also transcend all categories. It’s about love, family ties, friendship, self-knowledge, and other issues that are relevant to everybody. And the film is populated with a wonderful group of characters — male and female, Jewish and gentile, straight, gay, and “bi-curious” — who are treated with affection and respect by the filmmakers. My advice: whatever your own preferences, prepare to kiss “Jessica” and love it.

I adored this hilarious and touching film!star50 tpng Kissing Jessica Stein Review.
I absolutely adored this film – for its real life messiness, for its honest performances, for the eye it turns toward the unexpected nature of life and love. When mousy, perfectionist copyeditor Jessica (Jennifer Westfeldt) answers a personal ad for “women seeking women” on a whim – she is, and always has been, heterosexual – she meets Helen (Heather Juergenson), a sexy, confident bisexual who works in an art gallery. The two women click on a deep soul-mate level. As Jessica begins to find the happiness that has eluded her for so long, her high spirits are contagious – except to dark but lovable Josh (Scott Cohen), who is perplexed by his own feelings for the newly liberated, but still closeted, Jessica. Westfeldt and Juergenson, who also co-wrote the screenplay, provide so much depth to their characterizations and situations that the viewer must wrestle with his own expectations. Jessica’s awkward and sometimes outrageously funny exploration of what it means to love another woman never takes the easy way out.

The chemistry between Westfeldt and Juergenson is so phenomenal that even the most prudish viewer will want them to find happiness together. Tovah Feldshuh plays Jessica’s mother with energy and deep sensitivity; her powerful performance in one scene provides the pivot upon which the entire film turns. And how can one not like angst-filled, love-stricken Josh the way Cohen plays him? Even the supporting actors turn in memorable performances.

“Kissing Jessica Stein” is an off-beat romantic comedy that has far more hilarity than its more tired and traditional siblings. The story unfolds with a naturalness that deserves to be admired. The views of New York from Hoboken, as well as shots of Hoboken itself, provide an excellent backdrop to a story that blends progressive ideas with the old-fashioned, just as Hoboken itself does.

I loved it.

A step in the right direction for romantic comedystar50 tpng Kissing Jessica Stein Review.
This was a wonderful beginning to what I hope is a more open-minded approach to romantic comedies–two strong, reletively secure, stable women who fall in love. There are obvious neuroses (what would a romantic comedy be without it?) but the two women, Helen and Jessica, are impressively “together” all on their own.

Jessica Stein is a brilliant, but bored, copy editor whose boss happens to be an old flame from college. Just when she has convinced herself that she isn’t the problem–blaming everything the non-commital …men of New York–her brother announces his engagement. Mortified and a little worried about her own single status, Jessica makes a life-altering decision: she answers a singles ad placed by another woman.

…I won’t leak any details (because it’s too funny to give away) but they’re hilarious as they fumble through their relationship, learning as they go.

This movie is laden with great actresses, many of whom I’ve never seen before. We’ll doubtless see more of Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen (hopefully as a team, since they write and act exceptionally well together). The wonderfully quirky performances of Jackie Hoffman (Joan) and Esther Wurmfeld (Grandma) are hilarious.

The most refreshing aspect of this movie is that it doesn’t acknowledge the “femme” and “butch” stereotypes of lesbian relationships. Also, Westfeldt and Juergensen have written a screenplay that beautifully depicts (FINALLY) a long-neglected truth: sexuality is not black and white but rather fluid and ever-changing. I’m sure this “type” relationship is more common than anyone likes to admit. This movie is funny, quirky, fresh and all-around fun. I highly recommend it!

I loved Blue Harvest. Though it was hilareous. Had high expetations for the Something, Something, Somthing Darkside. Was utterly disappointed. It was the same old joke and they tired old references. I think Seth is losing his touch.

I’d wait for them to show it on TV.

Something, Something, Something…Eh?star20 tpng Something, Something, Something Dark Side Review.
I don’t know if it’s the comparison to Blue Harvest or that it’s difficult to just satirize The Empire Strikes Back while including the majority of the plot, but Something Something Something Darkside just kinda missed the mark. The entire program felt a little rushed, taking too long for some of the gags and speeding through others. If you’ve watched the trailer, the only really funny part you missed were the cracks at Fox in the credits at the beginning.

A great parody.star40 tpng Something, Something, Something Dark Side Review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and it delivered in all the ways I expected. I will look forward to the next one.

Ah, BBC, you’ve done it againstar20 tpng BBC Shakespeare: A Midsummer Nights Dream Lowest Price!
I love Shakespeare. I’ve seen many of his plays performed live, I’ll go to any Shakespeare movie playing, I’ve read ALL the plays.

I would love to love BBC productions, I really would. I’ve tried to watch a number of them over the years, and I’ve never made it through even one. Why? Stilted direction, stilted dialogue, stilted acting. Although I do believe in taking Shakespeare seriously, the BBC takes it much too seriously.

This is a comedy, for Bard’s sake! Act like it. Don’t shoot entire scenes with all the actors sitting down. Or standing like sticks. Move around, talk animatedly, show some emotion and fire.

I think I made it through fifteen minutes of this one, so take that for what it’s worth from a real Shakespeare lover.

It took me about six viewings before I stoped jumping out of my chair at the ghost scenes. Celebrated Irish actor Ciarin Hines is a fantastic lead character, Michael. Paring him with Iben Hejejle was an inspired match. His humanity and her warmth kept me routing for a connection. The heart thumping kissing scene did not let me down. Aiden Quinn played a great selfish, drunk, jerk,Named Nicholous. I could not stand the guy. I hope it makes it to my small town so I can see it on the big screen. A look inside cloistered walls.star50 tpng Into Great Silence Sale $9.99!
Zeitgeist Films presents a documentary directed and written by Philip Groning. In French and Latin with English subtitles. Filmmaker Philip Groning spent six months living among the monks of the Grand Chartreuse Charterhouse in the French Alps for his documentary “Into Great Silence.” The filmmaker was granted unprecedented permission to film in 2002. This was not given lightly, for his request was put forth to the prior sixteen years earlier.

This is cinema at its purest and most exalted. It is hard to place into words a film, which is wrought in silence. For 162-minutes you will be allowed a glimpse of the ascetic strictness of the monks. I do not see this as a documentary, but an immersion into an entire way of life that will have no voiceovers or explanations. Just a small part of our time spent in transcendent meditation on the human pursuit of meaning, on man as a religious and social creature, on the form and function of symbols, ritual and traditions. And on the rhythms of work and prayer, night and day, winter and spring.

It is a beautiful film where everyone will take away something different and hopefully fulfilling. The film will not allow you to enter the world of the monks, but to just view it from the outside. You will see the day-to-day activities from season to season and be able to form your own opinions and conclusions. Many may at first experience impatience at the repetitions and variations encountered, but allow yourself time to adjust to the contemplative pace. And be witness to the ordinary moments that taken together are a representation of grace.

The Carthusian monks who are the subjects of this documentary do not have a great deal to say. Living in a light-filled stone charterhouse in a picturesque valley in the French Alps, they bind themselves to a vow not of literal silence but of extreme reticence. We view the daily lives, prayers and routines of this most ascetic of Catholic Orders founded in 1084 by Saint Bruno. The monks, because of their vow of poverty, subsist on very little. They pray aloud at times and sing solemn Gregorian chants, but they rarely speak, except on there Monday walks.

The monks in their rigor and discipline find their freedom and fulfillment. Your view on the monastery and our world will change as the movie progresses. And isn’t that what a good movie or book is suppose to accomplish? It is a world of yesteryear as it existed one thousand years ago, where some modern technology has crept in, as you will see. In our modern world of moral decay this gives us a window to a traditional Catholic existence. A two thousand year tradition of following the Desert Fathers into a way of life that is rarely, if ever, seen.

I feel that this film is about the presence of God, a God who is there for those who seek Him with their whole hearts. In the film only a blind monk offers some simple but piercing observations on Christian happiness, abandonment to God’s providential care, and the tragedy of the loss of faith and meaning in the modern world.

This film is not only for Catholics, it is for everyone in the world to see and benefit from.

Should have been called “Into Great Happiness”star40 tpng Into Great Silence Sale $9.99!
I saw this film in the Independent Film Forum in NYC’s Greenwich Village, and ended up having a two hour discussion about it afterwards. The main thing that shocked me about this film was how happy all of these monks are. If anyone would tell the average modern American to have every hour of the rest of your life neatly regimented into time segments, without time for television, vacations, or intimacy with members of the opposite sex, most Americans would thing of that as being excruciatingly difficult. However, when looking at the daily activities of these men, you “get it”. Because of the regimentation of their daily tasks, when they do get a few hours on Sunday to talk, those hours are beautiful and meaningful. Their lives seem like the way life was supposed meant to be, one of hard work and communion with the Creator. I highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for a film that will slow their mental pace down and make them reflect on the importance of the various things you value in your own life.

Fascinating, if slow, documentary about carthusian monksstar40 tpng Into Great Silence Sale $9.99!
This almost silent three hour documentary tracks the daily lives of Carthusian monks living at the Chartreuse Monastery in the French Alps, as they live in a way that seems to be in such contrast with the modern world. It’s a fascinating movie if you are able to get into the slow rhythm of the film (if you are still in the movie theater after an hour, you will probably made it to the third hour). By the same token, it would be almost impossible to see it in your house on DVD, since there are so many possible distractions that would make you want to stop the film. Remarkably, given that European filmmakers tend to be among the most secular people in the world, the movie is also surprisingly respectful of the choices made by the monks in living in this particular way.

This film is in a foreign language and I couldn’t figure out which one. But it does have English subtitles.
It is a pretty heavy soft core porn, with a decent story line for that genre of movies.
It is much more revealing then a US soft core porn, and the sex scenes are obviously not faked like the US versions.

Brutalstar50 tpng Lonely Waters Sale $2.99!
I really enjoyed this movie, despite the fact that i said I would never watch another movie filmed backwards after seeing memento. It is slow in the first few minutes, but picks up right in the next scene in the club. While figuring out what is going on, the dialogue is really fun. There is a horrid rape scene in the middle of the film that seems to go on forever. If you cant stand that kind of thing, do not see the movie, period. It isn’t something you can fast forward through or shut your eyes during, it is an intergral part of the plot. Happy watching.

I remember feeling a exiguous disappointed after watching the 1st episodes of the Justice League series. Some awful decisions (in my idea) regarding characters effect and some stupid plots have led me to the conclusion that the fresh series would never arrive the same level of entertainment from the previous BATMAN / SUPERMAN shows. I am gay to say that I was cross.

Justice League has grown in quality during its 1st two seasons and every modern episode turned out to be better than the previous one. Even the characters perform issues were solved. The 2nd season of the series presents some of the greatest stories from all DC Comics challenging series.

After Season 2 final episode, the creative team responsible for the series embraced the challenge of taking the series to another level by creating the Justice League Unlimited, a group of well-kept heroes formed by as many “superior guys” from the DC Comics Universe as possible.

The result was substantial! Justice League Unlimited – Season 1 presents what I reflect to be the best arc of stories from all of DC Comics Provocative Series.

It is hard to say more without revealing notable aspects of the series, but I don’t reflect I’ll be telling powerful if I say that this particular arc involves a complex site and offers a unique perspective about shipshape heroes: Is it a honorable plan to have so noteworthy power in the hands of few desirable heroes? The search for the acknowledge for such demand resulted in a sizable development for the series and a must-have collection for all DC Comics fans.

Justice League Unlimited – Season 2 is sterling entertainment too, although not as astronomical as Season 1. But it definitely concludes the whole Justice League series beautifully and lets us fans wishing for more episodes… I really hope that happens someday.
